Improving periodontal (gum) health is all about consistency, care, and a bit of strategy!

  1. Brush Effectively Twice a Day
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste

  • Angle the brush at 45° to the gumline

  • Brush for at least 2 full minutes, especially near the gums

  • Consider using an electric toothbrush for better plaque removal

  1. Floss Daily—No Excuses

Flossing is non-negotiable for gum health. It removes plaque and food from places your brush can’t reach.
Can’t floss easily? Try interdental brushes or water flossers.

  1. Professional Cleanings

Regular dental cleanings (every 6 months or more if advised) are key to removing hardened tartar that you can’t get rid of at home.
For patients with periodontal disease, deep cleanings (scaling and root planing) may be necessary.

  1. Rinse with an Antimicrobial Mouthwash

Use a dentist-recommended mouthwash like chlorhexidine or essential oil-based rinses to reduce bacterial load and inflammation.

  1. Quit Smoking (If You Smoke)

Smoking is one of the top risk factors for gum disease. It affects blood flow, healing, and immune response in the gums. Quitting = one of the best things you can do for your gums.

  1. Eat a Gum-Friendly Diet
  • Load up on vitamin C, omega-3s, and calcium

  • Cut back on sugar and processed carbs

  • Stay hydrated to maintain saliva flow (which protects your mouth)
  1. Manage Medical Conditions

Conditions like diabetes can worsen periodontal disease. Keeping systemic conditions under control helps your gums stay healthy too.

  1. Be Consistent & Follow Your Dentist’s Advice

If you’re in periodontal maintenance, keep up with your 3- or 4-month recall schedule. Your dental team tailors this plan for a reason—stick with it!
